The semi final of the Div 3 league took place in Netwatch Cullen Park on Friday 29th May as St Pats took on their neighbours Rathvilly in a tough encounter. Bill Fanning reffed the game and did his best to allow the game to flow, which sometimes caused more problems than anything else as the game got very scrappy near the end with the ref losing control of the discipline.

Rathvilly played towards the scoreboard end into the wind and facing the sun in the first half, the elements making it difficult for them as they only managed 1.3 in the first half to St Pats 3.8. The main man for St Pats in the first half was big Josh Doyle at full forward who found the net twice, Jack Kennedy got three with Willie Doran(who had a fine game at midfield) put over two points with the outside of the boot. Shane Farrell also goaled in the opening half to give Pats a nice lead as they went down the tunnel. The Tullow backs were battling hard with Frank Wallace keeping them al in place.

The wind was gone from the village lads sails in the second half as Pats continued to dominate the middle third and reduce Rathvilly to some long range shooting. Paul Rooney got the fourth goal to put an end to the Rathvilly resistance and Anthony Keating had the pleasure of bringing on some subs, that being said some were forced as black cards were being dished out all round in the last ten minutes. This was the first time Keating had all of his players fit and present and will have learned a little for the championship and league final coming up. For Rathvilly, they may have put up a better fight if they hadn’t conceded the three first half goals. They had some strong performers and danger man Conor Owens looked lively throughout. Pats had some hearty performers all around the pitch. The new energy and power of Nicky Nolan, Shane Farrell and Willie Nolan has given Pats a new dimension in the middle, Lee Byrne continues to improve at wing back while Kennedy and co up front worked well together.
