The Carlow town side built up a lead in the first half on their home turf that St Pats just could not manage to pull back. The Carlow side led 1.7 to 0.4 at the interval with the goal coming from confusion and a missed tackle in the Tullow full back line to let Cian O'Brien(who also scored a point in the first half) through to slot past James Tobin after 8 minutes. This was the crucial score of a half where Mark O'Sullivan(2), Corey Harmon(2), Johnny Dowling(1) and Shane Kelly(1) also pointed. For the Tullow side Josh Doyle, Anthony Moran, Sean Condon and Willie Doran all pointed once each. The Tullow men kicked a few wides, and could possibly have had a goal when Moran chose to take his point. However, other than this the Tullow side were outplayed in the first half. Eire Óg looked hungrier and more alert in the opening 30 minutes.
The second half was a different game as Pats regrouped at half time and played some good attacking football. Willie Doran scored four points in a half of football where he showed why he is so highly rated. Cathal Bailey scored three points (two fantastic frees in the second half, one with the outside of the right boot which was over 50 yards from goal), Josh Doyle caught a lot of ball at midfield and scored a point of his own in the second half. With five minutes to go, there was only a point between the sides, after Dowling had added two scores with Owen Maddock one to leave the scores 1.10 to Tullow's 0.12.
With the game up for grabs, and St Pats driving forward it looked like the Tullow men might snatch victory. Eire Óg's Lee Callinan, fresh off the bench, capitalised on a mistake at the back and drove through on goal to secure victory with a nice finish to the net. Harmon tagged on the last two scores of the game to give the victory to the home side.
Mark O'Sullivan shone brightest for Eire Óg, and was supported well through the backs of James Ryan and Niall Kenny. Shane Kelly received a deserved black card after some poor tackling. Johnny Dowling kicked three points from play and was very lively in attack.
For St Pats Lee Kavanagh, Allan O'Neill and Shane Rohan got on a lot of ball in defence with Josh Doyle, Bailey and Doran doing well for Pats going forward. Both teams had previously secured semi final places, more than likely in opposite sides, so a rematch in the league final is very much a possibility. Both sides will need to improve in order to ensure they are victorious in their semi finals which will be played on the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Scorers; Pats- Doran 0.5(0.3f), Bailey 0.3(0.2f), Doyle 0.2, Condon, Moran 0.1 each. Eire Óg- O'Brien 1.1, Harmon 0.4(0.2f), Dowling 0.3, Callinan 1.0, O'Sullivan 0.2, Kelly, Maddock 0.1 each.
