FL Div 5 St Pats 6-14 Old Leighlin 0-2

posted 13 May 2014, 00:12 by PRO St Pats,Tullow,Carlow
St Pats dominated this league fixture from start to finish in Bro Leo Park. Both teams were slow to take to the field as St Pats hid from the rain in the dugout while Old Leighlin waited in the dressing rooms for the shower to pass!
Pats lead three points to nil after the opening few minutes with the pick of the opening scores coming from the outside of the right boot of "Skippy" Garry. Two goals followed shortly as Cathal Bailey slotted one into the corner and the new daddy on the team Phil O'Callaghan (baby Tilly born last week) hit a thunderbolt left foot shot to the top corner. Bailey then went for a point which dropped short into the net to leave St Pats 3.5 to 0.0 ahead after 15mins. It seemed Old Leighlin had yet to come from the dressing rooms. However, they began to battle hard with John Paul Gahan at centre back breaking up serval Pats attacks. The away side did get forward but were unable to register on the score board in the opening period. Jamie Byrne finished cleverly to the net for Pats after a neat pass from O'Callaghan, along with points from "Sham" Comerford (after a powerful run from half back) and corner back Eoin Doyle (who outdid his fellow corner back Malone who hit the crossbar moments earlier!) Approaching the half hour mark Paul Shepard hit the net and Bailey slotted over a nice point. The score saw Pats lead 5.9 to no score at half time.
Dave O'Leary scored two points for Old Leighlin in the second half and battled well throughout. Declan Goff at midfield and Niall O'Brien at half forward played well for the west Carlow club in a game which was very hard to keep competing. Credit must be given to all of the Old Leighlin team who have battled hard throughout Div 5, highlighting the determination of the Old Leighlin club(this is the clubs 3rd team!)
St Pats continued to dominate the 2nd half with the pick of the scores a lovely left foot effort from Gerry Dooley. Paul Canavan also hit the back of the net for the Tullow side's sixth goal!
St Pats might regret missed chances of victory at Bro Leo earlier in the league against The Cocks and Clonmore where both games were in the balance but each game slipped away, which may mean they miss out on a semi final place. There is plenty of talent in this group of players, if they can train well before championship and build a united defence they can go well in the Junior C. For Old Leighlin, this is going to be a very tough championship, however they worked hard throughout.
