JFC A Rd 2 St Patricks 1-16 Leighlinbridge 1-5

posted 6 Aug 2015, 06:14 by PRO St Pats,Tullow,Carlow

This game was played on the slippery surface of Netwatch Cullen Park with both teams fighting for 2nd place in the group. Both teams were already assured of a q/final spot before the ball was thrown in (as Milford pulled out) but Pats needed to improve on their opening game

V Eire Og while this was Leighlinbridge's first outing in the championship.

The lads from Leighlinbridge opened the scoring in the first minute and this was the only time they were ahead for the game. Willie Doran and Jack Kennedy scored 1.4 between them without reply in the next 15 minutes. Padraig Murphy then got a point from wing back. There were no scores from 20mins until 30mins as both teams were battling around the field and guilty of some missed chances. A poor error from the Pats defence on 30 mins sent Leighlinbridge in for a goal on 30 mins before Johnny Egg Fitzgerald finished a nice team move to put the Tullow side 1.7 to 1.2 ahead at the break.

The second half started well for the lads in black as Val Fleming kicked two frees in the opening few minutes to bring the scores back to 1.7 to 1.4. However, they only managed 1 more score for the rest of the half as Jacko kicked half a dozen more while Josh Doyle also raised a white flag and Johnny Egg hit a peach with his left peg. Leighlinbridge had a man sent off mid way through the second half and they lost their way completing after this. As their frustration grew so did their foul count. The big talking point heading out the gate was how the ref didn't give one of the Leighlinbridge subs a straight red card. He had Jack Kennedy in a head lock on the ground and was punching him right in front on the ref as the crowd roared in. Willy Fanning from Ballon choose to yellow card a Pats player for pulling the chap off Jack Kennedy while ignoring all the other boxing. It was such bad referring that it was comical!

The down side from this game for Pats was a minor injury to Eoin O'Toole while John Fitzgerald showed he still has the skill needed to make a difference for the team. St Pats go on to play a q/final at the end of Aug and that is when the real business starts!
