Two first half goals ensured an opening junior football championship success for Éire Óg in Netwatch Cullen Park on Wednesday. For thirty minutes, St. Patricks were made look very ordinary by a seemingly fitter and motivated town side but the Slaneysiders gave themselves hope for the rest of their campaign when they outscored their opponents in the second half.

On three minutes St. Patricks lost possession coming out of defence and Éire Óg moved the ball quickly into Mark Kelly who found the net with ease.

The Slaneysiders struggled and relied on Jack Kennedy for all their first half points which only came intermittently. The Reds moved the ball quickly as their full-forward line of Mark Corcoran, Mark Kelly and Recce Denieffe out-witted the Pats defence at their leisure. Such was Éire Óg’s determination, James Ruth shipped a heavy tackle but still got the scoring pass away to Corcoran. The centre-forward was rewarded for his industry when another defensive slip-up allowed him in and he finished to the net to help his side into a 2-7 to 0-3 interval lead.

St. Patricks were a different side after the interval. They won more 50-50 balls and Éire Óg had to be worried when their lead was reduced to six points on 39 minutes. They lost Corey Harmon to a black card after the midfielder was fouled twice in a minute but when the decision didn’t go his way, he let his frustration get the better of him.

Eoin O’Toole and John Fitzgerald had half-goal chances for Pats. Perhaps if one had gone in, it might have rattled Éire Óg. The two goal gap was maintained and the town side got going once more to ensure they took two championship points.
