Leinster Junior Hurling - St Pats 0.10 Wolfe Tones 2.16

posted 5 Nov 2014, 01:22 by PRO St Pats,Tullow,Carlow
This game was played on a fine sod at Bro. Leo Park with a slight wind blowing towards the scoreboard end, favouring Pats in the opening half. Wolfe Tones, who won the Longford Senior Championship, were the stronger team for most parts of the game and were deserving winners. Midfielder Martin Coyle won the ball from the throw in and soloed up the field to put the visitors ahead after 30seconds. Coyle had a fine game throughout and would have been in contention for a man of the match award. The visitors had 0.3 on the board before Medcalfe added the first Pats score from a placed ball after Dooley was fouled going through on goal. Patrick Cullen hit the net for the visitors on 25mins which was the critical score of the first half, in which Murphy and Shepard were the only men to score from play for the home side. Tones led 1.9 to 0.5 at the interval, Pats knew the second half would be tough playing into the breeze.
However, to the credit of St Pats they battled hard for the second period and were well able to mix it when a few rough tackles came in from the Longford men. The Tullow area side worked hard with O'Neill clearing a world of ball at full back, Ansboro and Cooper battled well at wing backs with Medcalfe once again top scoring for the team. Murphy, Shepard, Dooley and Caffery battled well in the forwards. The introduction of Kelly and Rooney gave a point straight away and some added energy.
Wolfe Tones had the upper hand in the second half and Pats never looked like they would really challenge for victory. If Pats had the panel of players all year that they had for this game this may well have pushed hard for the Carlow Junior crown. Wolfe Tones march on to the Leinster quarters while Pats must plan for 2015!
