Tullow to get the X-Factor

02 July 2012
X Factor star Mary Byrne was unveiled as Celebrity Bainisteoir for St. Patrick's GAA club in Tullow last Saturday.

The Dublin-born singer-songwriter, who shot to fame on the hit reality TV talent show in 2010, thrilled players, officials and hundreds of supporters when she arrived at club grounds.

The identity of the team manager had been a closely-kept secret but word quickly spread among excited onlookers as a car ferrying Mary drove through the club gates.

The former supermarket worker insisted that she would not sing but eventually relented and blasted out a couple of lines from the song that made her famous on X Factor - 'This is a Man's World'.

Mary also vowed revealed her wish to win the Celebrity Bainisteoir series with St. Patrick's GAA club, who are kindly sponsored by the Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa and Golf resort.

She was whisked into the club dressing rooms to meet the players after arriving at the St. Patrick's GAA grounds, before emerging to mingle with local people who had come out to greet her.

St. Patrick's players and officials also looked the part in new club gear, sponsored by Mount Wolseley.

Mary, 52, joked: "I have to say I'm absolutely shaking - I went into the (dressing) room, met all these good-looking guys and my legs started to go. My heart started to pound and now I have to watch them all running around a pitch - I may be old but I'm not dead!"

Mary promised that she would do everything in her power to ensure that the team does well in the fifth series of the popular RTÉ TV show, Celebrity Bainisteoir.

She said: "It's a bit of craic but at the end of the day it's serious enough. We want to win the whole thing.

"I think I've got a great bunch of lads here - I really do. They won't win it because of me - they'll win it because of their own confidence, skills and determination."

St Patrick's GAA PRO Tadhg Madden believes that Mary's arrival as Celebrity Bainisteoir will provide a massive boost to St. Patrick's GAA club.

He said: "When you look around today and see everyone…I can't stop smiling! We've got the best possible celebrity - we're absolutely delighted.

"It's a great community effort and I can't believe the crowds that came out. We're over the moon - she's so down to earth."

Tadhg revealed: "She gave a big speech about how she needs commitment and for everybody to get behind her. She has no football experience whatsoever but she said was on a boot camp for a while and learned a few little drills.

"But she's going to need us to help her as well. We'll all work together and she's in it to win it."

Tullow impressed by Celebrity Bainisteoir

18 July 2012
Tullow PRO Tadgh Madden admits that Celebrity Bainisteoir Mary Byrne has made a big impression on the players.

The former X-Factor contestant was announced to the team a few weeks back and she is busy working away with her charges ahead of the opening game.

And Madden revealed to the Carlow Nationalist that despite the adverse weather conditions, Byrne is putting the side through their paces.

"The weather was brutal. Mary got soaked to the skin and she didn't even have spare clothes with her or anything, it was lashing rain," said Madden.

"The training was basic enough, hand passing and criss-cross drills, that sort of thing, but she had obviously been looking up stuff. She has no experience of the GAA at all. She's still finding her feet, but she's started watching a few games to get an idea."

‘Bainisteoir’ dream comes a cropper in Mayo showdown'

IT’S BEEN a whirlwind summer of celebrities and TV debuts but it’s not over yet for St Patrick’s GAA Club, Tullow.

Despite losing their semi-final match against Moy Davitts in Mayo on Saturday, the local lads are still enjoying the trappings of their 15 minutes.

And the highs and lows of the Celebrity Bainisteoir first round meeting against Tramore will play out on our small screens this Sunday.

Tune in to RTÉ One on Sunday to see the Tullow tribe in action against Micheál McCraith GAA, not to mention the hilarious shenanigans at their X Factor-style talent show.

“It should be good. We’re all going to watch it together and have the craic and just enjoy it,” said PRO Tadhg Madden.

It’s the silver lining on a cloud that appeared over Tullow’s Celebrity Bainisteoir hopes on Saturday, as Calum Best’s team booked their place in the final with a 1-12 to 0-7 win over the Tullowmen.

“It was so disappointing. It was a tough weekend; they were a really good team. It was tough going. We tried ‘til the very end,” added Tadhg.

Despite difficult pitch conditions, the Tullow lads gave it their all in front of the Mayo crowd, which was overrun with blue and yellow.

“About 250 people came up from Tullow. We had great support and everyone was very vocal.”

And the Tullow brigade were out in force again on Sunday, as St Pat’s took on the Fighting Cocks in the intermediate football championship, a game they narrowly lost by a point.

“It was a tough weekend. We had a long trip to Mayo and the lads were all wrecked. It’s not an excuse, but we fought to the end. It was a privilege to be in Celebrity Bainisteoir and to get so far. It was a great experience.”

CELEBRITY BAINISTEOIR – THE RIVALS

Sunday 23rd September, 6.30pm

Last modified: Wednesday 12th September, 9.02am

It’s The Battle Of The Voices with Mary Byrne (The X-Factor) versus Richie Hayes (The Voice) in our second quarter final on Celebrity Bainisteoir - The Rivals.

Episode 3:

It’s The Battle Of The Voices with Mary Byrne (The X-Factor) versus Richie Hayes (The Voice) in our second quarter final on Celebrity Bainisteoir: The Rivals. Can Mary’s Carlow men rise to the occasion and take on Richie’s home county Waterford team from Tramore? With our loser having to pick up the the pieces and re-emerge as the winners assistant, will it be Mary polishing Richie’s boots for the semis or Richie cleaning her lads kit? In an episode complete with spying, singing, tears and an nail-biting match this one isn’t over till it’s over.

Everyone’s favourite celebrity GAA reality series returns to RTÉ One Television this September and this time things are a little bit harder for our celebrities. There is a whole lot more at stake this year as we introduce Celebrity Bainisteoir – The Rivals which sees each celebrity paired against a rival celebrity from their own world. It’s X-factor versus The Voice as singer Mary Byrne takes on Richie Hayes; the battle of UK reality TV as celebrity traveller and celebrity Big Brother winner Paddy Doherty takes on celebrity everything Calum Best; the battle of the babes as WAG Jessica Lawlor goes head to head with model Roz Purcell and it’s a Mr and Mrs Celebrity Death Match as married couple Brian Ormond and Pippa O’Connor go to war on the football pitch

And here’s the twist, our losing bainisteoir then has to become the winning bainisteoir’s assistant as they progress to the semi-finals. Charged with cleaning the teams boots, taking an extra training session or whatever task the winning bainisteoir chooses for their new assistant, gentle humiliation will be the order of the day as the slagging rights on this one are all to play for.

And that’s not all, this year we’re also putting the battle for home advantage clearly on the shoulders of our hero celebrities, where it’ll be entirely up to each of them to win this all important honour for their club through a series of unique celeb vs celeb challenges.
